Active AI Projects

What Do We Mean by an Active AI Project?

An active AI project is an AI initiative that an organization is currently working on to achieve a defined business outcome. It has moved beyond general interest in AI: a team is exploring a specific application, developing a solution, testing its usefulness, implementing it, or improving it through further project work.

In the AI Project Risk platform, “active” describes the customer’s initiative. It does not mean that the AI system is already operating in production or that our platform continuously monitors the project.

Active Does Not Necessarily Mean Deployed

An initiative can be active before its AI capabilities are available to users. The defining feature is ongoing project work—not whether the technology is live.

Exploration and Development

A team is investigating a defined use case, testing assumptions, or building an initial solution. For example, it may be developing an assistant to help employees find relevant internal guidance.

Testing and Implementation

A team is evaluating the solution, conducting a pilot, connecting it to business processes, or introducing it to its intended users.

Further Development of an Existing Solution

An AI solution is already in use, but a team is actively extending or improving it—for example, adding new tasks, addressing performance limitations, or adapting it for another business unit.

A live AI system is not automatically an active project. Routine operation alone is different from an ongoing initiative to develop or change that system.

A Specific Initiative, Not an Organization’s Entire AI Ambition

“Active AI Projects” refers to identifiable initiatives rather than an organization’s overall interest in AI.

Broad ambition

“Use AI to improve customer service.” This describes a direction, not a project that can be assessed as it currently stands.

Specific initiative

“Develop an AI assistant to help support staff answer customer enquiries.” This is an identifiable piece of work with a purpose and current activity.

The initiative may still have unresolved questions or changing requirements. It does not need to be fully designed to be active, but its purpose and current work should be sufficiently clear to describe.

Active at the Time You Describe It

For our platform, the relevant condition is the initiative’s status at the date of the information you provide. “Active” does not imply that the project is on schedule, successful, or free of problems. An initiative experiencing delays, rework, or unresolved challenges can still be active.

In short: an active AI project is a specific AI initiative with ongoing work toward a business outcome, considered as it stands at a particular point in time.

  • Specific initiative, not a general AI ambition
  • Ongoing project work, not necessarily production use
  • Described as it stands at a point in time
  • Can be delayed or incomplete and still be active
